5 Tips on Ductagami

Undoubtedly the most famous craft on my website are the duct tape sleuth kits that I make and sell. Many people ask “How do you make the sleuth kits?” Well I can’t put a step by step tutorial on how to make the Nancy Drew sleuth kits because it is a very detailed process, but I decided to give everyone a few tips to remember if they choose to make a duct tape craft of their own. Who knows, after getting the hang of things you may be able to make a sleuth kit of your own!

Tip 1: Use a cutting board

Small or medium cutting boards are easy tools to find in the kitchen that can be used for duct tape projects. They prove handy because they are easy to store and transport, and most of all they protect the surface under the duct tape from being sliced along with the tape!

Tip 2: Use an X-acto knife

Many people may use either a pair of scissors or their teeth to tear the tape. I do not recommend either of these methods for a few reasons. Personally, I don’t like using scissors because the tape tends to stick to the blades, which sometimes make it harder to cut a perfectly straight line. A second reason I do not use scissors is because the blades quickly get gummy or sticky.

An X-acto knife is my personal favorite for cutting duct tape. They can be purchased easily at a craft store or hardware store for a fairly decent price, and can last a very long time. One can place the duct tape on the cutting board, then cut it with the X-acto knife, without worrying about cutting the table underneath.

Tip 3: Find a good work space

Finding a good work space is a very important part of ductagami,  just like it is for any other art form. Make sure that you have enough room to stay organized, and also give yourself enough elbow room. You need enough room to unroll long lengths of duct tape without knocking over a tower of duct tape rolls with your elbow!

Step 4: Take your time

This doesn’t necessarily mean that every single thing must be perfect, but you don’t want to rush through a project just to see that your wallet just looks like a wrinkled piece of tape with some money inside. Especially on your first time doing a project make sure to focus, cut clean lines, and remember that it may take a little while before you get the hang of things.

Step 5: Have fun!

It may seem cheesy, or way too obvious, but it is important to remember that ductagami is all about having fun! Sometimes hard projects can go a little rough at times, but remember to keep trying and it will get better and better! And always keep your creativity flowing! The possibilities with duct tape is endless!

A Few Duct Tape Projects…

I haven’t posted in a long time! Well, I had the urge to make a post today and show you what I have been up to.

My friend  loves things made of duct tape, so on her birthday I decided to surprise her with a little something made of tape. I made a lunch box that was actually inspired by my friend’s pair of  polka-dot rain boots that I thought were adorable. Instead of making the lunchbox short and wide, like the lunchbox in my tutorial, I made this lunch box on the taller side. I also put cardboard on the bottom to give it some support. And, of course, I used Velcro on the flap.

I also wanted to tell my fellow duct tapers that there is a decorate a pumpkin contest at http://duckbrand.com if anyone is interested. The  Stick or Treat contest is to decorate a pumpkin with duct tape and then enter into the contest for a chance to win first, second, or third place. First place recieves  $1,000, second recieves $500, and third recieves $250. And I don’t know about you, but I am going to give it a try! It is also a fun and different way to decorate a pumpkin and shows off your creative side.

And before I finish I wanted to remind everyone that I still have four Nancy Drew duct tape sleuth kits for sale! They would make a great holiday gifts and would start a detective with the right materials to begin an adventure. You can check them out on the for sale page.

Sleuth Kits For Sale!

It is finally July 1st, the day everyone (or maybe only a few) has been waiting for— the famous Nancy Drew inspired duct tape sleuth kits are for sale! For a long time I have been telling you guys about the mini sleuth kits, which will also be for sale starting today. Let’s take a quick look about each bag before we get started.

The original sleuth kit was made to prepare a detective for anything. Therefore, it comes with the essentials:  a magnifying glass, a penlight, a pen, a pencil, and a notepad (for writing down useful clues).Of course, there is also a large pocket to hold other gadgets or possible evidence. This bag is 9” tall, and 9 ¼” wide.

The mini sleuth kit was made for younger detectives (or just detectives who like to carry a lighter load), and equips them with the right gear to start their adventures: a magnifying glass, a notepad, a pencil, and a penlight. Similarly to the larger kit, the mini kits also have a large pocket to hold other sleuthing materials. The mini kit was made to be lighter than the original kits, so it is half the size. The mini kit is 7 ¾” tall, and 5 ½” wide.

Every detective needs a trusted friend, so I have also made sleuth bags for 18” dolls. These bags will come for free with each original bag, and will also be sold individually. So, if you would like, you can buy a sleuth kit with a matching bag for your doll!

Before you head over to the For Sale page for more details, I just wanted to remind you that all sales are first come first serve. Be sure to contact me as soon as possible if you are interested.

Tell me which bag is your favorite in the comments below!

Mark Your Calendars!

I have officially chosen a date to begin selling the sleuth kits! I chose  July 1 to give myself plenty of time to make a good amount of bags. Each bag will be different, so I will sell a bag to the first person who contacts me about it. You can contact me by commenting, and then after that I will get back to you by e-mail.  To find out when I post the new bags, you can subscribe to get updates by e-mail, or you could follow craftdgirlblog on twitter.

I also wanted to mention in this post another craft that I have recently made as a gift for a friend. I wanted to make a messenger bag out of duct tape, so I gathered zebra tape, black tape, and some index cards, and went to work. I used the index cards to give the bottom of the bag some support(this will also prevent the bag from sagging over time), and then covered it with duct tape.   I also wanted it to be a gift set, so I added a matching wallet to go with it. And- voila! A perfect gift to start the summer!

Get Ready…

For about two months I have been working on the unique Nancy Drew inspired sleuth kits. I have chosen the color schemes according to the popular choices from the polls I have put up in the past, but I am also making a couple cute bags that I did not mention in the poll (which are my personal favorites!). I am still not sure what date I will begin the sale of  the bags, but I

promise that my next post will say the exact date. In addition to the sleuth kits, I may also sell a few other homemade crafts from this blog. The bags will only be on sale for a limited time only, so please keep checking back to see the start and the end dates.

The kits are a great Christmas present to any Nancy Drew fan, but I normally don’t sell the bags during Christmastime, so now would be the time to think about buying them for a very thoughtful gift. I will also offer a few packages, to give a detective just the right supplies for a mystery. Some may include a bag and a matching wallet, or maybe even a original bag with the mini, the choice will be yours! I will explain the specifics when I release the sale date.

If you want to know when I put up new posts in the future, you could follow craftdgirlblog on Twitter, or receive updates on my blog by e-mail!

Do you have any suggestions on new crafts you want me to try, or are  you interested in buying a sleuth kit this summer?? Don’t be shy, please comment below!   I would love to hear your feedback!

Sneak Peek!!!

Almost everyone who comes to this blog comes to see something made out of duct tape–mostly to take a look at my well-known Nancy Drew sleuth kit. Well, for about two months I have been working on “the surprise,”and although I am not finished yet I can’t help but tell you what it is….

…This is a picture of an unfinished mini Nancy drew sleuth kit. I decided to try making a mini kit because I have noticed that the originals could be a little too heavy for the younger detectives out there 😉 Preference will definitely make the final decision for the question: “The original bag, or the mini?” To help you out, I’ll give you a little more info (But, of course, you will get even more information when I am completely finished with the mini bag.)

The original bag is still perfect for you if you want all of the card slots, pockets, etc. in the front flap. The mini bag on the other hand, may be too small to fit as many pockets in the front. The mini bag will always have the magnifying glass, though( what is a Nancy Drew bag without the magnifying glass?!). Also, as I said before, the mini bag will be perfect for younger N.D. fans because it is about half the size of the original bag. (When I make the official post for the mini sleuth kit, I will put the exact measurements of both kits so that you can see the size difference, and a picture of them next to each other to show the contrast.)

You may be wondering why I am always mentioning how you can choose which you would like best, and how you can choose your preference…well, coming up this summer our famous Nancy Drew duct tape sleuth kits will be for sale!! Many people have asked to buy the sleuth kits, but I have been so busy I haven’t had time to make any. By this summer, though, I will have some bags made and ready to sell! Both the mini bag and the original will be for sale, so check back soon for more details!

P.S. Please comment and tell me what you think of the mini sleuth kit!

Keep Checking Back!

Keep checking back to my blog; soon there will be a surprise waiting for you! If you have read my old posts, you might have an idea of what it is.

Also, please do the poll below. I need your feedback! 🙂 I would like more votes to see which choice most people would prefer. So far it is tied between purple and plain beige. Personally, I like the leopard and the beige, but please vote to break the tie, or maybe choose another choice. You can also choose “other” and add another option.

If you want to see what the Nancy Drew bags look like, take a look at my N.D. Sleuth Kits page and you can tell me what you think there, too.

Thanks for reading!
